pictures of me

ten'o'six
i am
aged
when i began to see things more clearly,
i glued all the pieces together to make a collage.
first it was eyes...
different shapes, sizes and colours,
animal and human eyes - are they not one and the same? -
all watching, seeing, staring,
all wide open and fixed upon me.

then it was mouths...
some twisted, some smiling,
others laughing or snarling.
if i looked long enough they started to move,
forming various shapes, articulating syllables
that try as i might i couldn't make out.
whatever the eyes observed the mouths kept from me.

then came various images...
disjointed jigsaw pieces that didn't fit my puzzle
but i slotted them in haphazardly and
when i had them all pasted to my storyboard
i wiped over them with a turpentine rag.

the dark images muted to grey
the colourful ones faded so that in the end
they all blended into one another -
just a distant colourless blur.
