Tahiti / Manihi 2003
Though not technically in France, Tahiti is still part of one of its
overseas territories: French Polynesia. They fly the French flag but
have a different currency. Manihi is part of the Tuamotu Islands,
also part of French Polynesia and accessible from Papeete, capital of
Tahiti. My friend Kev and I headed over there for 10 R&R and it was
fabulous.
Lyon 2005
On arrival in France and on my way to Toulouse, the first stop was
Lyons. My first experience of metropolitan France, if you don't count
the nightmare arrival at Paris Charles de Gaulle and the TGV trip from
PCG airport to Lyons.
Perouges 2005
Considered one of the most beautiful villages in France. It's a very
well preserved/restored fortified medieval city dating back to the
11th-12th century.
Ambert 2005
Ambert is located in the region of Auvergne, volcano country. It's
famous for 'Fourme d'Ambert' cheese and parchment making. Though
I was there only briefly to visit 'family', it is set in beautiful
surroundings and I will definitely be going back to explore further.
Orist 2005
A small village in the south of France located in an area called 'les
Landes', which is characterised by its plane tree lined roads. Close to
the Atlantic coast and the Pays Basque, we stayed there a couple of
days in a beautiful converted barn. Incidentally the house can be
rented over the summer if anyone is interested, please get in touch
with me.
Bayonne 2005
On the Basque Coast close to the Spanish border and the world-famous
Biarritz. You should be seeing a lot more of this area since Remi's
mother now lives there.
Lot 2005
My friend Anne and I escaped to this little heaven for a weekend. It's
full of treasures including vestiges of the hundred year war, the
gorgeous medieval village of St Cirq Lapopie with its picturesque views
over the valley, beautiful scenery as the river flows quietly through
the valley surrounded by chiselled high cliffs... this place is
definitely worth a few detours.
Carcassonne 2005
This fortified city can be admired from afar when you take the highway
between Toulouse and Spain. World Heritage Site reminiscent of fairy
tales and dungeons and dragons, Carcassonne has a long and rich history.
Cauterets 2005
In winter it's a ski resort nestled in the Pyrenees very close to
Spain, year round it's a health spa where abundant sulfurous waters
provide relief to rhumatism sufferers. The place is surrounded by
amazing waterfalls and gorgeous hiking trails.
Cirque de Gavarnie 2005
At 50km from Lourdes, the cirque separates France from Spain. Rising to
over 3000 meters, it is streaked by the highest waterfall in
Europe. It takes about 1 hour to hike up there from the village of
Gavarnie and the scenery is quite spectacular.
Albi 2005
Albi is set along the banks of the river Tarn. Once a very prosperous
city, it has a rich history and an especially stunning cathedral.
Le Pic du Midi de Bigorre 2006
In the heart of the Pyrenees, this peak stands 2877 meters high and was
the spot chosen for a meteorological and astronomical observatory. It
can be accessed by cable-car from La Mongie and offers spectacular
views over the mountains.
Loire Valley and Normandy 2007
France's own valley of kings and Normandy, famous for the D-Day
landings and the Mont Saint-Michel, which is one of the seven man-made
wonders of the world.
Lourdes 2007
A favourite place of pilgrimage for Christians the world over, it's
definitely worth a visit. And the water made my skin look the
healthiest it had in years!
